Safer Essex Speed Strategy Consultation
Essex County Council has launched a public consultation on its draft Essex Safer Speeds Strategy, which aims to reduce serious road traffic collisions and improve road safety across the county.
Speed is one of the biggest factors in serious road collisions. In 2025, 60 people lost their lives on roads in Essex, with many more suffering life-changing injuries. Nearly half of these deaths were linked to excess speed. Residents also frequently report feeling unsafe walking, cycling or travelling around their communities because of vehicle speeds.
The draft strategy has been developed in partnership with the Safer Essex Roads Partnership and forms part of the county’s Vision Zero ambition, which aims for no one to be killed or seriously injured on Essex roads by 2040.
The strategy proposes a flexible, evidence-based approach to managing speed limits across Essex. Rather than introducing blanket speed limits, decisions would be made on a case-by-case basis, taking into account how roads and streets are used and where there is local demand for change.
Have Your Say
Residents, businesses and organisations are invited to share their views on the draft strategy.
The consultation is open for six weeks from Monday 16 March to Sunday 26 April 2026.
You can view the draft strategy and complete the online survey here:

Feedback received during the consultation will help refine the strategy before it is finalised and adopted later this year.
Printed copies of the consultation documents will also be available in main libraries, or they can be requested by emailing saferspeeds [at] essexhighways.org.
